Quick take

A fast 8.1:1 gear ratio baitcasting reel with 20 lb max drag and magnetic control system, built for bass fishing.

The Origin F1 is a right-hand baitcasting reel with an 8.1:1 gear ratio, built on a fiber-reinforced graphite frame with an aluminum handle. It pairs a six-disc carbon drag with 20 pounds of maximum drag, seven bearings and a magnetic control system to help manage the spool on casts. At just under 7 ounces, it suits anglers who want a lightweight, fast-retrieve reel for mono, fluorocarbon or braid.

Best for

  • Fast lure retrieves and pick-up when bass are aggressive
  • Flipping and pitching heavy lures into cover
  • Anglers who want high line speed and responsiveness

Skip if

  • You fish with ultralight lures or finesse techniques
  • You prefer slower gear ratios for swimbaits and crankbaits

Strengths

  • 8.1:1 gear ratio retrieves 31 in per turn for fast lure action
  • Magnetic control system provides smooth braking without overshooting
  • 20 lb carbon drag system handles heavy pressure and cover

Trade-offs

  • Fast gear ratio can be fatiguing on long casting sessions
  • Better suited to heavy lures; light lures are harder to cast accurately
  • Requires practice to master magnetic braking system
