Quick take

Best for

  • Catching shiners and shad in ponds and rivers
  • Anglers with some cast net experience
  • Bait fishing for stripers and catfish

Skip if

  • You have no experience casting a net
  • You fish very deep water or turbid water

Strengths

  • 3/8 in mesh retains small bait without tangling
  • Tested 80 lb braille lines hold heavy catches

Trade-offs

  • A 4 ft cast net requires open space and practice to throw
  • Monofilament can tangle if not stored carefully
  • The weight per foot means it sinks fast, good for shallow water only
