Quick take
A 12 or 13 foot telescoping tenkara rod kit with line, tippet, and flies for Japanese-style fly fishing.
This 12 ft telescopic tenkara rod is built from 30T carbon fiber with a cork grip and a 7:3 action, and it collapses to roughly 21 inches to ride in a pack. Tenkara needs no reel, so you tie on the furled leader and tippet and start fishing. The kit also brings a fly box and hook keepers, which suits a newer angler trying small trout water.
Best for
- Small stream trout fishing with minimal gear
- Anglers new to fly fishing and tenkara technique
- Remote or tight-water situations where light rods excel
Skip if
- You need to cast long distances over large water
- You want traditional reel-based fly fishing
Strengths
- Collapses to 21.6 inches making it highly portable and packable
- No reel required means instant setup and fewer components
- 7:3 action balances power for larger trout with sensitive presentation
Trade-offs
- Limited to shorter casting distances compared to reel-based fly fishing
- Lightweight 30T carbon requires careful handling to avoid damage
- Tenkara technique requires different casting mechanics than Western fly fishing
