Quick take

A 2 1/4 in shallow crankbait with lifelike shad profile and bullet-like casting from the weight transfer system.

The MF Bluegill Flicker Shad gives bass anglers a panfish-style color on Berkley's shad-shaped crankbait. It is a hard bait built to imitate a fleeing baitfish on a steady retrieve.

Best for

  • Shallow bass structure like fallen trees and ledges
  • Rock-strewn flats and points
  • Casting in wind for distance

Skip if

  • You need to reach deep water
  • You are fishing heavy weeds

Strengths

  • Weight transfer system produces bullet-like casts
  • Realistic shad profile and size imitate natural baitfish
  • Fusion19 hooks penetrate easily and hold in hard-fighting fish

Trade-offs

  • Crankbaits twist line on steady retrievals
  • At 1/4 oz it requires a medium spinning setup
  • Limited to 10-12 ft depth

About this type

A crankbait is a hard-bodied lure that wobbles on a steady retrieve; most have a lip that sets how deep they run.

On a lipped bait, a bigger or steeper lip usually sends it deeper.

Most lipped crankbaits float at rest and dive when reeled, so a pause lets the lure back up and away from a snag.

Compared with Jerkbaits: A jerkbait is worked with twitches and pauses and often suspends or floats; a crankbait is reeled.
