Quick take
A 7-foot cast net with 3/8 inch mesh for catching live bait and small fish in shallow water, shallows and bays.
The Betts Old Salt is a round monofilament cast net with a 7-foot radius and 3/8-inch mesh, made for throwing for baitfish from shore, a dock or a boat. It comes in a reusable utility box with how-to instructions, which helps if you are learning to throw a net. Rinse it with fresh water and dry it before storing to keep it in shape between trips.
Best for
- Catching shad, herring and minnows as live bait
- Beginners learning to cast a net
Skip if
- You need to catch fish in deep water; cast nets work best shallow
- You prefer hook-and-line methods to netting
Strengths
- Fine 3/8 in mesh catches most small bait species
- Monofilament line is less visible to bait fish
- Included utility box keeps net organized and protected
Trade-offs
- 7-foot diameter is heavy to throw repeatedly
- 3/8 in mesh tangles easily if not rinsed and dried
- Requires open water for casting; awkward from docks
