Quick take
Compact plastic fish scalers with sharp edges that keep scales from flying and are gentle on hands.
This orange handheld fish scaler comes as a pair of molded plastic tools, each about 5 inches long and light enough to weigh only a few ounces. Its hand-contoured shape works in either hand, and the compact size slips easily into a tackle box. It suits anglers who clean their catch on the boat or dock and want scales to stay out of the air.
Best for
- Cleaning fish on deck or at the cleaning table
- Anglers who want a no-mess scaling tool
- Boats and kayaks where space is limited
Skip if
- You scale fish rarely
- You prefer a stainless steel scaler for durability
Strengths
- Design contains scales so they don't scatter
- Plastic is safe on hands compared to metal
- Compact size fits easily in a tackle box
Trade-offs
- Plastic dulls faster than stainless steel
- May slide on very large or firm scales
- Orange color can be lost or harder to find
