Quick take

A 16-pack of 1 oz lead egg sinkers, the weed-free standard for catfish and all-around bait fishing.

This is a lead egg sinker from Bullet Weights, an oval weight with a hole through the center so line slides freely through it. The 1-ounce size suits slip-rig setups for catfish and general bottom fishing in fresh or salt water. The smooth egg shape is a familiar choice when you want a weight that slides through cover without hanging up as easily.

Best for

Catfish rigs with live bait or cut shad
Weed-free bottom fishing in fresh and salt water
Sliding sinker rigs under bobbers

Skip if

You need to avoid weeds; pyramid sinkers are better
You want to minimize hang-ups in heavy cover; use split shot instead

Strengths

Oval shape with center hole reduces snagging
Heavy weight reaches bottom quickly
Works equally well in fresh and salt water

Trade-offs

Lead sinkers are becoming restricted in some regions
Egg sinker can split your line on the cast
Requires checking that the hole is clear and snag-free

Fishing fit

Water: Freshwater
Saltwater
Techniques: Live bait
Bottom fishing
Float fishing
