Quick take
A galvanized steel mesh fish basket with trap-door design that floats in water and collapses flat for storage.
This collapsible wire fish basket is built from galvanized steel mesh with a float on its top cover, so it rides at the surface while fish stay held in the water. Spring-controlled trap doors open and close the basket, and a quarter-inch mesh opening keeps smaller fish inside. It folds flat to about 17 by 13 inches for carrying, a fit for bank and drift anglers who want to keep a catch alive until the end of the day.
Best for
- Live-release fishing where you hold fish in the water
- Stream fishing where you wade and need hands-free storage
- Anglers keeping multiple fish during a day-long trip
Skip if
- You plan to beach your catch and carry them in your pack
- You fish only small panfish that need no containment
Strengths
- Fine mesh prevents small fish from escaping while allowing water flow
- Galvanized steel resists rust and corrosion in saltwater
- Float keeps basket from sinking if dropped overboard
Trade-offs
- Large basket adds drag in strong current
- Spring mechanism can jam with sand or debris
- Handles are thin wire and uncomfortable with heavy load
Fishing fit
- Water
- Freshwater
- Saltwater
