Quick take

A lightweight fiberglass pole spear for underwater spearfishing, designed for small to medium-size fish.

The Cressi FG/101 is a fiberglass pole spear built for light handling in the water and easy transport. It is a single 36 in pole with a latex-tube sling and a 10 in paralyzer tip that has three barbless prongs. It suits spearfishers going after small to medium fish who want a simple setup.

Best for

  • Freediving in shallow coral and rocky reefs
  • Anglers with spearfishing training and experience

Skip if

  • You have no spearfishing training; this requires certification
  • You target large fish; pole spears are for small to medium size

Strengths

  • Fiberglass is lightweight and fast underwater
  • 36 inch length is portable and easy to travel with
  • Paralyzer tip minimizes suffering in humanely harvested fish

Trade-offs

  • Spearfishing requires training and local permits
  • Rubber band propulsion is less powerful than gun-style spearguns
  • 36 inch is short range; fish must be within 15-20 feet
