Quick take

Lightweight floating fish gripper with jagged teeth and simple push-lock for safely holding small and medium fish by the mouth.

This Daiwa light game fish holder is a compact lip gripper sized for small and medium fish. Its jagged teeth help hold slippery catches, and the tapered nose slips into the mouth easily. A push on/off lock keeps the grip closed, and the body floats and has holes for a lanyard rope. It suits anglers who handle small fish often and want a light tool on the boat or shore.

Best for

  • Light-game saltwater fishing for small snappers and grouper
  • Controlling slippery fish when removing hooks without wet hands
  • Handling dangerous fish with spines without getting punctured

Skip if

  • You fish only catch-and-release and never hold fish
  • You target large gamefish requiring a hand gaff

Strengths

  • Jagged teeth hold slippery fish and dangerous fish without sliding
  • Push-lock mechanism is simple and fast; no lever complications
  • Lightweight floating body means it won't sink if dropped overboard

Trade-offs

  • Tapered shape only fits small to medium fish mouths well
  • Push-lock mechanism can wear loose after frequent use
  • Plastic is not as durable as machined aluminum for rough handling
