Quick take
A mid-size saltwater spinning reel with high gear ratio and 22-pound drag for deep jigging and trolling.
This is the 2016 Daiwa BG in size 4500, a spinning reel built around a metal body and an aluminum handle. It is set up for braided line and jigging, with a 22-pound maximum drag and a weight of about 22 ounces. It suits anglers who want a larger spinning reel for shore jigging and heavier saltwater work.
Best for
- Shore jigging for flounder and striped bass
- Trolling from slow-moving boats
- Offshore live-bait presentations
Skip if
- You need ultra-heavy drag for large stripers or tuna
- You fish shallow inshore water
Strengths
- High 4.9 gear ratio and 37-inch retrieve recover line quickly
- Stainless steel bearings resist saltwater corrosion
- Twenty-two pound drag handles medium-size saltwater gamefish
Trade-offs
- PE line capacity suggests braid rigging, adding sensitivity challenges
