Quick take
An 8' medium-power downrigger trolling rod for trout, bass and salmon on 10-20 lb line.
This Daiwa Wilderness Downrigger is an 8-foot, two-piece trolling rod with a medium power, a fast action and a 10-20 pound line rating. The blank is graphite with a cork handle, and it breaks down to about 50 inches for carrying. It suits anglers trolling for trout, bass or salmon, including setups with downriggers, planer boards or dipsy divers.
Best for
- Trolling with downriggers on lakes for trout and salmon
- Walleye trolling at depth with crank baits
- Freshwater boat fishing with live bait presentations
Skip if
- You cast from shore; trolling rods are boat-specific
- You need extreme sensitivity; downrigger rods are moderate
Strengths
- Fiberglass blank flexes to absorb shock and reduce line breaks
- 8' length provides leverage on a downrigger rig
- Cork handle provides comfort and feedback during long trolls
Trade-offs
- Fiberglass is heavier and less responsive than graphite
- Downrigger fishing requires specialized boat equipment
