Quick take
A foldable mesh trap designed to passively catch minnows, shrimp, crabs and crawdads for use as live bait.
This folding bait trap collapses flat for the trip and opens into a mesh cage with six entrance holes. It suits anglers who want to gather minnows, crayfish or shrimp before heading out. A hand rope and a carry bag come with it, and a removable bait pouch holds the attractant.
Best for
- Live bait gathering for larger fish
- Crabbing and shrimping in shallow bays
- Hands-free bait collection while fishing
Skip if
- You need to actively chase and net bait
- Your fishing spot has strong currents that prevent the trap from staying in place
Strengths
- Multiple entrance holes and 360-degree design let prey find the trap easily
- Folds flat for compact storage and transport
- Dual zippers provide redundancy if one fails
Trade-offs
- Requires you to check and retrieve it periodically; not an active method
- Black mesh may spook fish if used as a holding pen above water
- Set-and-forget approach means longer wait times compared to netting
