Quick take
A lightweight aluminum fish gripper with magnetic release for safely handling fish of any size in fresh or saltwater.
This compact fish gripper from Ego has an aluminum body, an extra wide jaw opening and a foam grip shaped for the hand. A magnetic release lets go of the fish quickly, and a carabiner clips it to you or the boat. At about 6 inches long, it fits in a tackle box and suits both fresh and salt water for handling fish by the lip.
Best for
- Catch and release fishing
- Controlling large fish for photos
- Anglers who want minimal contact with the fish
Skip if
- You need to weigh fish while holding them
- You fish only small panfish
Strengths
- Aluminum construction is corrosion-resistant and floats if dropped
- Magnetic release activates with one hand for quick unhooking
- Extra wide jaw accommodates fish of various shapes and sizes
Trade-offs
- Magnetic release may fail if the jaw extends fully
- Extra wide jaw takes up more space in a tackle box
- Without a scale integrated, you cannot measure catch weight on the water
