Quick take
A freshwater spinning reel with a 5.2 gear ratio and 9+1 bearing system available in five sizes for various species.
The Handing M1 in size 500 is the lightest spinning reel in its freshwater line, built around a graphite frame and a CNC aluminum spool. It runs a 5.2:1 gear ratio with 9+1 stainless steel ball bearings and an anti-reverse switch. The handle swaps between right and left hand, which suits anglers working trout, panfish and other finesse presentations.
Best for
- Finesse fishing for trout with light line
- All-purpose freshwater spinning where durability matters
- Anglers who fish both right and left handed
Skip if
- You need specialized saltwater corrosion resistance
- You fish topwater or need constant high-speed retrieves
Strengths
- Wide size range from 500 to 5000 covers trout through pike
- 3-layer woven drag is smooth and reliable under pressure
- Interchangeable handle lets you fish both handed on one reel
Trade-offs
- Graphite frame may flex under heavy loads compared to full metal
- 5.2 gear ratio is moderate and suits neither ultra-light nor heavy cranking
- Brass gears require maintenance in sandy or dusty conditions
