Quick take

An automatic hook setter that uses rod flex to trigger strikes, easing the fatigue of vertical jigging.

The Jaw Jacker is an ice fishing hook setter that uses the flex of your rod to drive the hook when a fish bites. A wing nut adjusts the trigger from light to heavy, and the rod angle can be changed to set the hook harder or softer. It fits ice rods up to about 30 inches, and its ABS plastic body folds flat for carrying several in a bucket.

Best for

  • Long winter sessions with light bite detection
  • Hands-free presentations when fishing multiple holes
  • Tight-line spring jigging techniques

Skip if

  • You prefer active hand-jigging
  • You fish crappie that require sensitive presentations

Strengths

  • Reduces hand and arm fatigue over long ice fishing days
  • Adjustable wing nut lets you tune trigger sensitivity
  • Folds flat for easy transport in a bucket or backpack

Trade-offs

  • The trigger can be too sensitive in very light wind
  • Works best with medium to heavy jigs
  • Requires practice to set hook tension correctly
