Quick take

A large vinyl-coated steel trap with one-way entry tunnels and escape ports for harvesting and sorting crabs.

This 28-inch vinyl coated steel crab trap is designed for Dungeness crab on the West Coast, and its mesh is sized too large for blue crab on the East Coast. Four entry tunnels carry one-way latches, and two smaller escape tunnels let smaller crabs leave the trap. A top opening makes it simple to take catches out, which suits anglers working from a kayak or a small boat.

Best for

  • Dungeness crab fishing on the West Coast
  • Commercial and sport crabbing operations
  • Storing and sorting live crabs

Skip if

  • You fish blue crab on the East Coast
  • You need a compact kayak trap

Strengths

  • Large capacity handles multiple crabs without overcrowding
  • One-way latches keep crabs from escaping once inside
  • Escape tunnels allow undersized crabs and females to leave

Trade-offs

  • Heavy and bulky; requires a boat or large vehicle for transport
  • Vinyl coating deteriorates over time in sunlight
  • Mesh size allows bait loss if not regularly checked
