Quick take
Aquel is a silicone gel floatant for dry flies, sold in a half-ounce tube. It stays workable in hot and cold weather and leaves no oily slick on calm water. Work a little into the hair and hackle with your fingers before the first cast, or use it to treat an indicator. Skip it on CDC flies, which call for a different gel.
Best for
- Dry fly fishing on technical trout streams
- Keeping flies floating through repeated casts
- Extended fishing sessions where float loss matters
Skip if
- You prefer powder desiccants only
- You use nymphs or wet flies exclusively
Strengths
- Temperature stable; won't melt in heat or harden in cold
- Masks human scent which spooks wary trout
- Doesn't leave oily slick on calm water
Trade-offs
- Gel must be worked into fly by hand
- Requires reapplication after water-logged flies
