Quick take

A 2-3/8 in floating crankbait with a tight wobble that deflects off cover and rises out of snags in shallow water.

The LC 1.5 is a floating squarebill crankbait about 2.4 inches long, built to dive to around 4 feet and deflect off rocks, wood and riprap in shallow cover. Its true square bill and #4 treble hooks suit bass, pike and trout anglers working tight structure. The silent running and natural walleye finish make it a fit for clear or stained water.

Best for

  • Fishing around rocks, stumps and laydowns
  • Shallow water from 2-4 ft deep
  • Bass that ambush near structure

Skip if

  • You need a lure that tracks true at high speeds
  • You fish heavy wood or dense matted grass

Strengths

  • Square bill design deflects off cover without getting stuck
  • High-float plastic rises out of snags and can back out
  • Tight wobble triggers reaction strikes at various speeds

Trade-offs

  • Buoyancy means it may rise out of deeper strikes
  • Tight wobble works best around cover rather than open water
  • Square bill is less effective than lip designs in heavy current

When and where to fish it

Its natural pattern suits clear water, where fish get a long look at the lure. Crankbaits are often fished in spring and fall, when fish are feeding on baitfish.

How to fish it

A crankbait with a square lip kicks away from wood and rock, so it is fished right through cover. This floating crankbait rises when you stop reeling, which makes a stop-and-go retrieve work.

Deflecting off cover

  1. Cast past a stump, a laydown or a rock and reel the lure into it.
  2. Keep reeling as the lip hits; the lure kicks to the side and rights itself.
  3. Pause for a moment after each deflection, then carry on.

Stop and go

  1. Crank the lure down with several fast turns.
  2. Stop for a second and let the lure rise slowly.
  3. Repeat all the way back to the bank or boat.

Steady cranking

  1. Cast past the target and point the rod tip down toward the water.
  2. Reel at a steady medium pace until the lure reaches its depth.
  3. Keep it ticking the bottom or the cover, and pause when it deflects.

How deep and around what

At 1/2 oz it runs to 4 ft, shallow enough to tick the tops of submerged grass and bump shallow wood.

What you need with it

A 1/2 oz crankbait is usually fished with a casting rod, a baitcasting reel and 10 to 14 lb fluorocarbon line.

  • Casting rodsA medium-power rod with a moderate action keeps the hooks pinned on a steady retrieve.
  • Baitcasting reelsA slower gear ratio makes a steady cranking pace easier to hold.
  • Fluorocarbon lineSinks, so the lure reaches its depth; 10 to 14 lb for this weight.

Pairs with

A 1/2 oz lure pairs with a medium-power, moderate-action rod made for 1/4 to 5/8 oz lures and with 10 to 14 lb line.

About this type

A crankbait is a hard-bodied lure that wobbles on a steady retrieve; most have a lip that sets how deep they run.

On a lipped bait, a bigger or steeper lip usually sends it deeper.

Most lipped crankbaits float at rest and dive when reeled, so a pause lets the lure back up and away from a snag.

Compared with Jerkbaits: A jerkbait is worked with twitches and pauses and often suspends or floats; a crankbait is reeled.
