Quick take

A 2-3/8 inch squarebill crankbait with hard deflection off cover for reaction bass strikes.

The LC 2.5 in the 269 BE Gill color is a floating squarebill crankbait about 2 3/4 inches long that runs to roughly 4 feet. Its square lip deflects off wood, rock and plants, which suits bass working shallow cover. The molded gill plates, eyes and scale detail give it a natural baitfish look.

Best for

  • Aggressive bass in shallow structure
  • Rock and wood cover bouncing and deflection
  • Fast searching and reaction strikes

Skip if

  • You fish deeper water beyond 5 feet
  • You prefer subtle presentations

Strengths

  • Strong wobble and hard cover deflection trigger strikes
  • High-float construction bounces off wood and rock without snagging
  • Sharp #2 treble hooks improve hook-up rates

Trade-offs

  • 5 foot diving depth limits deep structure fishing
  • Square bill design may snag in dense weed growth
  • Aggressive wobble less effective in cold water

When and where to fish it

Its natural pattern suits clear water, where fish get a long look at the lure. Crankbaits are often fished in spring and fall, when fish are feeding on baitfish.

How to fish it

A crankbait with a square lip kicks away from wood and rock, so it is fished right through cover. This floating crankbait rises when you stop reeling, which makes a stop-and-go retrieve work.

Deflecting off cover

  1. Cast past a stump, a laydown or a rock and reel the lure into it.
  2. Keep reeling as the lip hits; the lure kicks to the side and rights itself.
  3. Pause for a moment after each deflection, then carry on.

Stop and go

  1. Crank the lure down with several fast turns.
  2. Stop for a second and let the lure rise slowly.
  3. Repeat all the way back to the bank or boat.

Steady cranking

  1. Cast past the target and point the rod tip down toward the water.
  2. Reel at a steady medium pace until the lure reaches its depth.
  3. Keep it ticking the bottom or the cover, and pause when it deflects.

How deep and around what

At 5/8 oz it runs to 4 ft, shallow enough to tick the tops of submerged grass and bump shallow wood.

What you need with it

A 5/8 oz crankbait is usually fished with a long casting rod, a baitcasting reel and 10 to 15 lb fluorocarbon line.

  • Casting rodsA long medium-heavy rod with a moderate action throws a heavy lure far and absorbs its pull.
  • Baitcasting reelsA slower gear ratio makes a deep-diving lure easier to reel all day.
  • Fluorocarbon lineSinks, so the lure reaches its depth; 10 to 15 lb for this weight.

Pairs with

A 5/8 oz lure pairs with a medium-heavy, moderate-action rod made for 1/2 to 1 oz lures and with 10 to 15 lb line.

About this type

A crankbait is a hard-bodied lure that wobbles on a steady retrieve; most have a lip that sets how deep they run.

On a lipped bait, a bigger or steeper lip usually sends it deeper.

Most lipped crankbaits float at rest and dive when reeled, so a pause lets the lure back up and away from a snag.

Compared with Jerkbaits: A jerkbait is worked with twitches and pauses and often suspends or floats; a crankbait is reeled.
