Quick take
Hollow-body topwater spider lure with moving legs and self-righting ballast for realistic walking and gliding action.
The Widow Maker colorway of this 2.5-inch spider lure weighs half an ounce and is a hollow-bodied topwater bait with walking legs that stride, glide and twitch across the surface. Its hollow body is built to push through dense weeds, and it floats upright on the water. Anglers work it in short bursts around lily pads, grass mats and shore cover, or across open water.
Best for
- Shallow grass beds and lily pads
- Explosive topwater bites on bass and pike
- Low-light conditions where surface action triggers strikes
Skip if
- You fish open water without cover
- You need a deep-diving presentation
Strengths
- Weedless hook design slides over vegetation cleanly
- Legs create commotion and mimic fleeing prey
- Hollow body floats and lands softly on the surface
Trade-offs
- Hollow body absorbs water and becomes difficult to cast wet
- Plastic construction less durable than hard baits
- Weedless hooks often miss fish on short strikes

- Freshwater

About this type
A lure is an artificial bait that draws a strike with its shape, color and movement.
Each kind is built for certain depths and ways of fishing.
Weight decides how far a lure casts and what rod and line it needs; color changes how visible it is in the water.
