Quick take

Automatic yo-yo reels with sensitive flat triggers that set the hook when a fish bites, ideal for unattended pole fishing.

This is a set of four spring-loaded yo-yo reels, an automatic trap-style reel that sets the hook and pulls the fish in on its own once you attach it, bait it and set the depth and trigger. Each has a flat trigger, an adjustable spring tension, a galvanized steel frame and a stainless steel spring, and comes pre-spooled with a short length of 60-pound nylon line. It suits anglers who want a hands-off option for setting out several lines, and local rules on automatic reels are worth checking first.

Best for

  • Hands-free bank or pier fishing where you monitor many lines
  • Beginners or casual anglers wanting simple fishing methods
  • Live bait applications on calm lakes and slow-moving water

Skip if

  • You want to actively work lures and baits yourself
  • You fish only active casting methods

Strengths

  • Automatic hook-set mechanism eliminates need to monitor line closely
  • Sensitive flat trigger responds to light bites
  • Stainless steel and galvanized construction withstands elements

Trade-offs

  • Set-and-forget method sacrifices control and technique finesse
  • Automatic setting may embed hook too deeply in soft-mouthed fish
  • Wind and water movement can trigger false hooksets
