Quick take
A 18/0 circle hook sized for big tuna, with 2X extra heavy wire and a needle point for rapid penetration.
The Mustad 39960-DT is a 2X strong circle hook in size 18/0, built for large tuna and other big-game fish. Its needle point, ringed eye and Duratin finish suit heavy in-line rigs, and the circle shape is designed to settle at the corner of the mouth. It fits anglers targeting big fish on drifts, trolling spreads or live bait setups.
Best for
- Live bait on drifts for offshore tuna
- Heavy-tackle trolling rigs
- Large saltwater species that swallow bait
Skip if
- You fish small finesse presentations
- You need a hook that sets on a strike alone
Strengths
- 2X extra heavy wire handles the weight and power of big fish
- Circle hook design hooks fish in the corner of the mouth for fewer deep hooksets
- MTL-V1 point is 50% sharper with penetration resistance than standard hooks
Trade-offs
- At 18/0 size it is extremely large and heavy
- Requires setting the hook with a firm tighten rather than a hard strike
- Duratin finish oxidizes in saltwater and needs regular freshwater rinsing
