Quick take

A watertight double-sided fly box that holds 363 flies and floats if dropped in the water.

This double-sided fly box from New Phase packs slit foam on both faces, with room for several hundred nymphs, dry flies and streamers in one case. It measures about 7.5 by 4.5 by 1.75 inches and weighs roughly 7 ounces, so it rides easily in a vest or chest pack. A gasketed lid keeps the contents dry, and the case floats if it slips into the water.

Best for

  • Fly fishers who carry many patterns
  • Keeping flies dry on rainy days or when the box is dropped
  • Organizing nymphs, dry flies and streamers

Skip if

  • You fish one or two patterns and want a small pack
  • You prefer magnetic or clip-style fly boxes

Strengths

  • Watertight gasket keeps flies dry even if submerged
  • Floats for easy retrieval if lost in water
  • Long-slit foam keeps flies from shifting during travel

Trade-offs

  • At 363 flies, the box is heavy to carry all day
  • Snap-tight lid can break with rough handling
  • Foam-style boxes take longer to find flies than compartments
