Quick take
Soft plastic hellgrammite baits with natural scent and ultra-durable plastic, fished on jigs or drop shot.
This 3-inch hellgrammite is a soft, stretchy plastic imitation of the insect larva that smallmouth and other bass feed on. It floats, so it rises off the bottom when paired with a jig head, drop shot or Texas rig, and it can also be fished like live bait. The pack holds four baits in a natural color with scent built into the material.
Best for
- Trout fishing in rocky streams with structure
- Drop-shot fishing in deep pools
- Finesse techniques when live hellgrammites are unavailable
Skip if
- You fish only warm water; hellgrammites are cold-water indicators
- You prefer traditional live bait
Strengths
- Super-soft material lasts dozens of catches, unlike standard plastics
- Natural built-in scent requires no liquid attractants
- Floating material keeps bait off bottom where it spooks fish
Trade-offs
- Hellgrammites are a specialized bait with limited appeal
- 3-inch size is small and requires light rods
- Natural color blends in; less visible than bright baits

About this type
A lure is an artificial bait that draws a strike with its shape, color and movement.
Each kind is built for certain depths and ways of fishing.
Weight decides how far a lure casts and what rod and line it needs; color changes how visible it is in the water.
