Quick take
A compact size 500 spinning reel with a 5.0:1 gear ratio and eight-bearing system for smooth, controlled retrieves.
The Okuma Ceymar A in size 500 is a compact, ambidextrous spinning reel with a 5.0:1 gear ratio and a multi-disc oiled felt drag. It weighs about 6.6 ounces and pairs a graphite body with an aluminum handle, which suits light rods for panfish, trout and similar finesse fishing. Spooled with light mono or braid, it gives newer anglers an easy-handling setup for small lures and live bait.
Best for
- Small and ultralight spinning outfits
- Trout and panfish on light line
- Anglers who value smooth drag over cranking power
Skip if
- You need a larger capacity for big fish
- You want a faster retrieve speed
Strengths
- The eight-bearing system minimizes friction during cast and retrieve
- The 5.0:1 ratio suits controlled presentations at close range
- The gun metal finish is durable and resists corrosion
Trade-offs
- Size 500 has low line capacity, limiting distance casts and deeper fishing
- The 5.0:1 ratio is slower than faster reels; retrieval takes more cranks
