Quick take
A 6-weight fly rod suited for large streamers, poppers, and nymph rigs in demanding conditions.
The Orvis Clearwater is a graphite fly rod that breaks down into four pieces for easy travel. It has a black nickel aluminum reel seat and an EVA handle. Anglers fishing for trout reach for it when they want a straightforward fly rod for streams and rivers.
Best for
- Drift boat fishing with heavy flies
- Popper and streamer fishing near structure
- Alaska and big water with strong currents
Skip if
- You fish small dry flies; a lighter weight rod is more responsive
- You prefer shorter casts; this length excels at distance
Strengths
- Muscular enough to turn over large, air-resistant flies
- Full Wells handle with fighting butt provides superior power and comfort
- Graphite construction balances durability with reasonable weight
Trade-offs
- 6-weight is stiff for delicate presentations in small streams
- Requires well-matched line weight; oversized or undersized lines reduce performance
- At 9 ft 6 in, it needs room to cast and can be fatiguing for all-day sessions
