Quick take

Full-metal conventional reel sized for saltwater casting and bottom fishing, with level wind and fast gear access for convenient maintenance.

The PENN Fathom II Level Wind in size 15 is a conventional star-drag reel for boat, shore and kayak fishing in salt water. It has a full-metal body and side plates, HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers and a 4+1 stainless steel bearing system. A level wind keeps line laying evenly, and the fast-access side plate makes gear checks simple. It suits anglers stepping up to a conventional reel for bottom fishing and trolling.

Best for

  • Saltwater boat fishing with live and cut bait
  • Bottom fishing and jigging in coastal waters
  • Anglers who prefer round baitcasting reels for power

Skip if

  • You fish freshwater and need lighter drag systems
  • You need a low-profile reel for precise casting

Strengths

  • Full-metal body and side plates are durable in harsh saltwater
  • HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers withstand heavy use
  • Level wind and fast gear access side plate speed up maintenance

Trade-offs

  • At 15 size, the reel is larger and heavier than low-profile models
  • Higher line capacity means stiffer drag adjustment
  • 5.1:1 ratio is moderate, not ideal for fast retrieve techniques
