Quick take
A robust conventional reel with full-metal construction, level wind and HT-100 drag for charter boat use.
The Penn Fathom II in size 20 is a right-hand level wind conventional reel with a built-in line counter, handy for trolling at set depths. It has a full-metal body, a 5.5:1 gear ratio and a 4+1 stainless steel bearing system. The HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers give up to 30 pounds of maximum drag, and a fast-access side plate makes gear servicing simple.
Best for
- Saltwater chunking and heavy bait fishing
- Jigging and bottom fishing on structure
- Anglers who need a reel that takes heavy abuse
Skip if
- You want a lighter, faster reel for topwater work
- You fish freshwater or need a smooth high-speed retrieve
Strengths
- Full metal body and side plates endure repeated heavy use on charter boats
- Level wind system aligns line evenly and reduces backlashes
- HT-100 carbon fiber drag delivers 30 lb stopping power reliably
Trade-offs
- Conventional reels have a learning curve for casting and retrieving
- At 21.9 oz this reel is heavier than spincast reels
- This size and power level suits big baits and big fish, not light finesse
