Quick take
Lightweight star drag reel with graphite frame, designed for light to medium trolling and baitfishing.
The PENN Rival Level Wind in size 15 is a conventional reel with a graphite frame and sideplates, an aluminum spool and a level wind that lays line evenly. A 5.1:1 gear ratio brings in about 29 inches per crank, and the star drag with carbon fiber washers tops out at 15 lb. It suits anglers who want a lightweight, right-hand-retrieve reel for trolling and general conventional work.
Best for
- Light trolling for stripers or salmon from smaller boats
- Downrigging or live bait fishing in saltwater
- Situations where reel weight and size matter
Skip if
- You need a reel rated above 15 lbs drag for large saltwater species
- You fish freshwater primarily; this is a saltwater-specific design
Strengths
- Lightweight graphite frame and aluminum spool reduce fatigue
- Line capacity rings show exactly how much line remains when fighting fish
- Star drag system provides smooth, consistent pressure
Trade-offs
- Star drag reels require skill to set and maintain drag pressure correctly
