Quick take

A sea fishing casting aid that protects fingers from pain and allows longer casts from fixed spool reels.

This two-piece pair of casting triggers clips onto a fixed spool rod to take the line load off your index finger during a cast. The black metal and plastic build suits surf, shore and beach fishing, including cold-weather days when a bare finger takes a beating. It is meant to help you put a little extra distance into each cast.

Best for

  • Mackerel and beach casting with fixed spool reels
  • Cold weather fishing to protect cold fingers
  • Anglers seeking maximum distance on each cast

Skip if

  • You fish with baitcasting reels
  • You prefer traditional finger-on-line casting

Strengths

  • Reduces finger pain that builds up with repeated long casts
  • Nickel galvanized coating resists corrosion from saltwater
  • Allows extra distance by keeping line off the finger during release

Trade-offs

  • Takes practice to use properly
  • Anti-friction coating may wear with heavy use
  • Device must be on rod, adding slight weight and bulk
