Quick take
A balanced, smooth spinning reel with composite body and aluminum spool for medium freshwater species.
The Quantum Optix 40 is a size 40 spinning reel built for walleye, bass and other mid-size species. It runs a 5.2:1 gear ratio that picks up 34 inches of line per turn, with 3+1 bearings and a front drag that tops out at 14 pounds. The handle swaps to either side, and the spool holds 230 yards of 10-pound mono or 310 yards of 20-pound braid.
Best for
- Walleye and bass in moderate sizes
- Fresh and brackish water fishing
- Anglers wanting a reliable mid-range reel
Skip if
- You fish saltwater regularly
- You need maximum line capacity
Strengths
- Lightweight composite body and side plate resist corrosion and reduce weight
- TRU Balance rotor and front-adjustable drag provide smooth, balanced retrieves
- Continuous anti-reverse clutch enables solid hooksets
Trade-offs
- Composite materials may not match all-metal durability long-term
- 14 lb drag adequate only for medium-sized fish
