Quick take

A retractable pocket-sized hook sharpener with fine grit aluminum oxide stone and neck lanyard for quick touch-ups during fishing.

The Rapala RHKS-1 is a pocket-sized hook sharpener built around a fine-grit aluminum oxide stone. The stone retracts into the body for compact storage in a tackle bag, and a neck lanyard keeps it handy on the water. It suits anglers who want to touch up dulled hook points between spots.

Best for

  • Anglers who sharpen hooks regularly to maintain penetration
  • Keeping a sharpener on your neck lanyard alongside pliers and tools
  • Touch-ups after catching multiple fish or bouncing bottom

Skip if

  • You replace dull hooks instead of sharpening them
  • You fish soft plastics where hook sharpness is less critical

Strengths

  • Aluminum oxide stone is effective on all common hook steels
  • Retractable design fits in a pocket or on a lanyard without bulk
  • Fine grit restores point without over-sharpening

Trade-offs

  • Fine grit sharpens slowly compared to medium or coarse stones
  • Small size limits edge control and precision sharpening
  • Repeatedly retracting the mechanism can eventually wear the spring
