Quick take
A 9-foot fluorocarbon leader in 5X taper for selective trout in clear, spring creek water.
A nine-foot trout leader made entirely of fluorocarbon, in 5X at about 0.152 mm. Clear fluorocarbon is a common pick for trout in clear water and for smaller flies. It is made by RIO Products in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Best for
- Dry fly fishing on slow, clear trout water
- Fishing small flies on light tippet
- Presentations to educated, spooky trout
Skip if
- You need heavier tippet for larger flies or wind
- You fish fast, turbid water where leader visibility is not critical
Strengths
- Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible to trout underwater
- 9-foot length allows substantial distance and line control
Trade-offs
- Fluorocarbon is stiffer than nylon; slower turnover of large flies
- 5X test strength requires delicate casting and careful handling
- Leaders degrade with UV exposure; protect from direct sunlight
