Quick take

A braided dacron backing line in 20 lb test for spooling trout and panfish reels.

Best for

  • Trout and bass fly reels with standard arbor
  • Building reel spools for freshwater fishing
  • Filling reel capacity with strong backing

Skip if

  • You fish saltwater species
  • You need thin backing for maximum fly line capacity

Strengths

  • High strength dacron resists fraying
  • Low stretch keeps reel tension consistent
  • Smooth braid reduces friction on rod guides

Trade-offs

  • Thicker than some other backing materials
  • 20 lb may be overkill for small trout reels
  • Dacron absorbs water and can rot if stored wet
