Quick take
A small steel tippet ring for attaching new tippet to tapered fly leaders without shortening the leader.
A small steel ring for fly anglers that sits between a tapered leader and the tippet. Tie it to the leader with a clinch knot, then tie the tippet to the ring the same way. Swapping tippet no longer eats into the leader, so rigging stays quick and the leader keeps its length.
Best for
- Extending fly leader life by replacing just the tippet section
- Simple and reliable tippet connections on the water
- Anglers who tie tippet to leader frequently
Skip if
- You prefer knoting tippet directly to leader
- You fish large saltwater flies requiring heavy tippet
Strengths
- Tie-on ring allows tippet replacement without cutting the leader
- Small size is unobtrusive in clear water
- Simple clinch knot attachment works with any line weight
Trade-offs
- Ring adds a slight connection point and potential failure point
- Requires learning the tippet ring knot
- Small ring size is fiddly in cold weather or failing light
Fishing fit
- Water
- Freshwater
- Techniques
- Fly fishing
