Quick take
An 8000-size Shimano spinning reel built for saltwater with 6 ball bearings, a high-strength aluminum body, and a 4.9 gear ratio for medium retrieve speed.
The 8000PG is a large saltwater spinning reel from Shimano's Stradic SW line, built for heavy offshore work like jigging for big game fish. A 4.9 gear ratio and 3.7 inches of line per turn favor power over speed, and the drag tops out at 13 kg. The aluminum body is sealed against spray, and the spool holds up to 410 meters of No. 3 PE braid.
Best for
- Light to medium saltwater casting
- Jetty and beach fishing for small to mid-size species
- Anglers who want a smooth, durable saltwater reel
Skip if
- You fish heavy lines or large saltwater species needing a conventional reel
- You want a higher gear ratio for faster retrieves
Strengths
- Saltwater-grade materials resist corrosion in harsh environments
- High-strength resin rotor and duralumin drive gear provide durability
- Multiple ball bearings offer smooth operation during long fishing days
Trade-offs
- The 8000 size is heavy at 25.6 oz, tiring for extended sessions
- Saltwater reels require regular rinsing and maintenance
