Quick take
A Shimano Vanquish 4000XG spinning reel with 6.2 gear ratio and 11 kg max drag, built for saltwater or big freshwater.
The 23 Vanquish in 4000XG is a large-body spinning reel with a magnesium body, a 6.2 gear ratio and 11 kg of maximum drag. It weighs about 205 g and carries 11 ball bearings plus one roller bearing. A fit for anglers who want a compact, light spinning reel with room for heavier braid and fluorocarbon.
Best for
- Saltwater boat and shore fishing for stripers, bluefish and offshore species
- Large freshwater species like pike, musky and stripers
- Anglers who value Japanese engineering and smooth operation
Skip if
- You fish small streams; this reel is too large
- You need a lower gear ratio for slow retrieves
Strengths
- Magnesium body and CI4+ rotor reduce weight without sacrificing strength
- Titanium veil and durable materials handle saltwater corrosion well
- 6.2 ratio provides good balance between speed and power
Trade-offs
- Large 4000 size is heavy and demands a medium to medium-heavy rod
- 11 kg max drag requires careful setting to avoid over-tightening
