Quick take
A large baitrunner spinning reel with an auto-return secondary drag for holding live bait, large line capacity, and smooth casting.
The Shimano Baitrunner D in size 12000 is a large spinning reel built around the Baitrunner system, which lets a fish take line freely while the bail stays closed. It has a cold-forged aluminum spool, a one-piece bail and a drag that tops out around 9 kilograms. A big-capacity reel like this suits anglers who soak bait for bigger fish and want a quick switch to a fixed drag when the fight starts.
Best for
- Live bait fishing for catfish and stripers
- Saltwater surfcasting where distance matters
- Anglers who want a secondary drag system without flipping the bail
Skip if
- You want a small, lightweight reel for finesse fishing
- You fish only artificial lures
Strengths
- Baitrunner drag lets fish take line against a lighter secondary setting
- Cold-forged aluminum spool is strong and casts far
- Propulsion line management system improves casting distance
Trade-offs
- Large size means the reel is heavy for extended use
- Baitrunner feature adds complexity; more parts to maintain
- Larger size makes it slower to retrieve than mid-size reels
