Quick take
A mid-sized saltwater spinning reel with a high retrieve rate for fast line pickup and medium-heavy applications.
The 2019 Stradic 4000XG is a Shimano spinning reel with a 6.2 gear ratio that picks up about 39.8 inches of line per turn of the handle. It has an aluminum body, a stainless steel bail and a rated maximum drag of 24.3 lb, at a weight of 9.9 oz. It suits anglers who want a fast-retrieve, mid-size spinning reel for saltwater or heavier freshwater work, and it can be set up for either hand.
Best for
- Saltwater jigging and casting
- Fast-moving retrieves on medium tackle
- Moderate overhead fishing from boats or shore
Skip if
- You fish exclusively in freshwater
- You need a slower, fine-tuning retrieve
Strengths
- Gear ratio of 6.2:1 retrieves line quickly for rapid presentations
- Aluminum body and durable components suit saltwater use with regular rinsing
- Weight and drag capacity handle medium to larger saltwater species
Trade-offs
- At 9.9 oz, it is heavier than ultralight spinning reels and fatigues long casting sessions
- High-speed reels sacrifice cranking power for speed, making them less efficient with heavy loads
- Regular saltwater maintenance is required to prevent corrosion
