Quick take
A Shimano TLD II size 50 conventional reel with two-speed retrieve for big game saltwater fishing and trolling.
The Shimano TLD II in size 50 is a right-hand lever-drag conventional reel with a two-speed retrieve, so you can switch to a low gear when a heavy fish needs steady cranking. It has a one-piece graphite body, an aluminum spool and handle, stainless steel gears and four bearings. A loud click alarm and a trolling focus make it a fit for anglers working offshore rods with monofilament.
Best for
- Trolling for large offshore species like tuna and marlin
- Anglers fishing heavy tackle and strong lines from a boat
- Situations where two-speed retrieve provides tactical options
Skip if
- You fish freshwater or nearshore species
- You prefer higher gear ratio reels for faster retrieves
Strengths
- Patented 2-speed shifting mechanism adjusts retrieve speed mid-fight
- A-RB anti-rust bearings resist saltwater corrosion
- Powerful drag system handles extended battles with large fish
Trade-offs
- Large size and weight make it unsuitable for shore or light-tackle fishing
- Two-speed system requires practice to use effectively
- Requires heavy saltwater trolling rod and heavy braided line
