Quick take
Durable star drag reel with rigid HAGANE body and high line capacity for trolling and live bait saltwater fishing.
The Shimano Torium 40 is a star-drag conventional reel with a Hagane body and an S-Compact frame, made for saltwater bottom fishing and trolling. Its 5.1:1 gearing brings line in at a steady pace, and the Cross Carbon Drag handles runs from bigger fish. At about 2.5 pounds, it suits anglers working live bait or heavier braid setups from a boat.
Best for
- Trolling for tuna, striped bass, and large saltwater species
- Live bait fishing at depth where maximum drag is needed
- Situations requiring high line capacity over long distances
Skip if
- You fish freshwater; this reel is designed only for saltwater
- You want a compact reel; Torium sizes are bulky for reel size
Strengths
- HAGANE body provides extreme rigidity without extra weight
- 35-pound drag rating handles very large gamefish
- 7 stainless steel bearings resist saltwater corrosion
Trade-offs
- Star drag requires practice to set and maintain correctly
- Large sizes are heavy after hours of fighting fish
- High line capacity means spooling takes more backing line
