Quick take
A moderate-action 9-foot fly rod for trout, with forgiving casting and light leader support.
This is a 9 ft, four-piece fly rod in 5-weight, built on a moderate-action blank that loads easily and keeps delicate presentations forgiving. Aluminum oxide stripping guides, stainless-steel snake guides and an anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat make it suited to both fresh and salt water. It comes as a kit, so it suits a newer fly angler putting together a first outfit for trout, panfish or small bass.
Best for
- Trout in small to medium streams
- Beginners learning to fly cast
- Delicate dry fly presentations
Skip if
- You fish large saltwater fish; this rod is too light
- You need fast action for quick hooksets in wind
Strengths
- Moderate action forgives casting timing mistakes
- Aluminum oxide guides reduce friction and heating
- 4-piece design breaks down easily for travel
Trade-offs
- 5-weight is limited to small trout and panfish
