Quick take
A silicone-based paste dressing for fly line and flies, providing flotation and line suppleness.
This is a small can of Thames Mucilin paste in the red, non-silicone formula, used to dress both fly lines and dry flies. It suits anglers who prefer to keep silicone away from cane rod varnish or older silk lines. The paste firms up in the cold and softens in warm weather, so a little warmed on a fingertip works into a fly's hackle easily.
Best for
- Dry fly fishing with weight-forward line
- Floating fly line maintenance between seasons
- Treating dry flies before each day on the water
Skip if
- You fish indicator nymphs; this adds flotation
- You prefer liquid floatants over paste
Strengths
- Silicone formula provides long-lasting flotation
- Works on both fly line and individual flies

- Red can is recognizable and iconic
Trade-offs

- Paste gets messy on fingers and requires cleaning
- Does not work on sinking fly lines
