Quick take
A lightweight tenkara rod kit for small to medium streams, including line, flies and a protective rod case for travel.
This 12-foot, nine-section graphite tenkara rod collapses into a hard tube case, which makes it easy to carry to small streams and ponds. With no reel seat or guides, you fish a fixed line, a simple setup for a first fly rod. The kit adds a fly box with a dozen flies, three line styles, tippet and a line nipper, aimed at trout and panfish.
Best for
- Fly fishing small streams and tight spaces where a reel is not needed
- Beginners learning to cast and control line in hand
- Backpackers who want a compact, lightweight setup
Skip if
- You need to cast distance; tenkara rods work best in tight casting
- You want a reel for conventional fly fishing
Strengths
- Weighs only 3 oz; ideal for all-day wading
- Nine-piece rod fits easily in packs and car trunks
- Includes everything to start: line, flies, fly box and protective case
Trade-offs
- No reel means no backing and no way to strip line quickly for long runs
- Tenkara works best in small water; 12 feet is too short for big rivers
- The hand-held line control requires practice and is fatiguing on long days
