Quick take

A baitfeeder spinning reel with an 11-bearing system, 5.5:1 gear ratio, and 28-pound max drag for saltwater and freshwater fishing.

This Yoshikawa baitfeeder is a size 4000 spinning reel with a 5.5:1 gear ratio and 11 stainless ball bearings. A rear lever switches it into free-spool, so line can run out without opening the bail, which suits live-bait fishing for catfish, carp and striped bass. The graphite body, aluminum spool and handle that swaps sides make it a flexible pick for freshwater and saltwater anglers, from pond to surf.

Best for

  • Live-bait fishing where free-spool capability improves presentations
  • Saltwater fishing for stripers, catfish and large carp
  • Anglers seeking robust construction for heavy use

Skip if

  • You exclusively cast artificial lures
  • You need a lighter, more compact reel

Strengths

  • Baitfeeder drag system provides a free-spool mode without opening the bail for live bait
  • Graphite and aluminum construction resists saltwater corrosion
  • 11-bearing system ensures smooth, quiet operation through long fishing sessions

Trade-offs

  • Baitfeeder system adds complexity compared to standard spinning reels
  • 15-ounce weight may tire the arm during all-day casting
  • CY 4000 model is mid-size, not ideal for extreme large or small fish
