Quick take

Bite-sized swimbait that mimics shad and panfish fry with a segmented body and paddle tail.

The Z-Man Shad FryZ is a 1.75-inch soft swimbait built to imitate small shad and baby panfish, the forage that crappie and other panfish feed on. Its thin, deep body moves into a segmented section and a paddle tail, and the soft ElaZtech plastic gives it a lively swim at slow and fast retrieves. Its hook slot is shaped for Z-Man's ShroomZ jighead, which makes it a simple choice for crappie, panfish, bass, perch and trout.

Best for

  • Crappie and panfish in ponds and lakes
  • Trout in small streams
  • Ultralight spinning and jigging

Skip if

  • You need a larger profile for bass in heavy cover
  • You fish large impoundments where bigger baits work better

Strengths

  • ElaZtech construction resists tail bite-offs from aggressive fish
  • Thin segments deliver natural articulating action
  • Molded hook slot eases rigging on finesse jigheads

Trade-offs

  • At 1.75 in it is small for catfish and large bass
  • ElaZtech is softer than other plastics and tears more easily
  • Light weight makes casting on heavier rods less effective

About this type

A lure is an artificial bait that draws a strike with its shape, color and movement.

Each kind is built for certain depths and ways of fishing.

Weight decides how far a lure casts and what rod and line it needs; color changes how visible it is in the water.
