Quick take

A compact round baitcaster with machined aluminum construction for saltwater conditions.

The Ambassadeur S 6500 is a round baitcasting reel from Abu Garcia, built around a machined aluminum spool and a 5.1:1 gear ratio. It has a synchronized level wind, a four-pin centrifugal brake and a star drag topping out at 11 pounds. The 6500 size holds 255 yards of 17-pound mono or 350 yards of 30-pound braid, which suits anglers stepping into round-reel baitcasting for bass, catfish and similar freshwater work.

Best for

  • Inshore saltwater fishing
  • Casting live bait or chunk baits
  • Anglers seeking classic round reel design with modern features

Skip if

  • You fish strictly freshwater
  • You need extreme drag capacity for large fish

Strengths

  • Machined aluminum spool provides strength without excess weight
  • Centrifugal brake manages spool speed for consistent casting
  • Synchronized level wind system ensures even line lay

Trade-offs

  • Heavier than modern low-profile baitcasters
